Start- and end year2024-2027

COREu is one of the largest research and innovation project in the field of carbon capture and storage (CCS) funded by a European programme.

Its goal is to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future, targeting a reduction of 6.8 Mt/year of CO2 by 2035 and 36 Mt/year by 2050. This will be achieved by demonstrating key technologies across the entire CCS value chain in Europe. The project aims to develop new demonstration projects that connect CO2 sources with potential storage sites.

The project is based on the basic concept of CCS, that is, the process of capturing waste carbon dioxide either directly from the atmosphere or from energy production and industrial plants, and subsequently transporting it to sites for reuse or storage in geological formations.
The COREu project specifically employs advanced chemical absorption techniques to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the carbon capture process.

COREu aims to establish an openly accessible, cross-border infrastructure and logistics network for CCS, connecting emitters and storage sites across Europe. Its objectives include:

  1. Accelerate CCS deployment by demonstrating safe and effective CO2 transport and storage.
  1. Increase the TRL of the CCS technologies developed.
  1. Achieving a more efficient, clean, sustainable, secure, and competitive energy supply through new solutions for smart grids and energy systems based on more performant renewable energy solutions.
